Deserts in Europe? ๐๏ธ Yes indeed!
When I first stumbled upon this video, I was truly surprised โ I had no idea that Europe had deserts! ๐๏ธ
Like many others, I always associated deserts with ๐ Africa, ๐ต New Mexico, or ๐๏ธ China.
But land deterioration is reaching a โ ๏ธ critical point in several Mediterranean countries โ
๐ต๐น Portugal, ๐ช๐ธ Spain, ๐ฎ๐น Italy, and ๐ฌ๐ท Greece.
These are four EU nations already facing severe desertification.
In fact, they have joined the ๐ United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification to take action.
How a look! โ desertification is not just happening somewhere else. ๐ฑ
Why are certain parts our our world turning into Deserts? ๐ต
Here are a few of the best Videos that helped us understand it! ๐

Hope in a changing Climate! What if we change?
by John D. Liu
This documentary was a real eye-opener for me! ๐
I had no idea how everything was connected in creating desertification, or how it could actually be reversed โ until I saw what happened on the Loess Plateau in China.
Hope in a Changing Climate, created by John D. Liu, shows how an entire landscape, once barren and lifeless, was transformed into a thriving, green ecosystem. It proves that ecosystem restoration can truly bring hope โ not just for one region, but for the whole planet. ๐ฟ๐
Produced by BBC World, the documentary also shares inspiring success stories from Ethiopia, Rwanda, and China, showing how restoring degraded land can stabilise the climate, reduce poverty, and promote sustainable agriculture. ๐ฑโจ
After witnessing these transformations, John D. Liu went on to establish the Ecosystem Restoration Camps movement โ a growing global network where people work together to regenerate ecosystems and rebuild biodiversity. ๐๐ช
Itโs not just a film โ itโs proof that healing the Earth is possible when we act together. ๐๐
Forests Keep Drylands Working ๐ฟ

Forests Keep Drylands Working was another real eye-opener for me! ๐
In this film, John D. Liu speaks among many with Geoff Lawton โ another legend in the world of dryland restoration โ and together they explore some of the most pressing environmental issues surrounding the Mediterranean region and the Middle East. ๐
John also takes us on a global journey through the worldโs drylands, revealing their past function, their present dysfunction caused by widespread deforestation, and the resulting impacts on soil loss and the hydrological cycle.
Today, around 70% of the worldโs drylands are degraded, and the effects of climate change are especially severe in these regions. Thatโs why restoring these often vast landscapes is absolutely essential. ๐ฑ
This documentary shows that there are ways to reverse the damage weโve inflicted on the planet.
It highlights inspiring efforts like PRESENCE in South Africaโs Baviaanskloof โ a pioneering, transdisciplinary initiative focused on ecosystem restoration and sustainable land management. ๐ฟ๐
Forests Keep Drylands Working reminds us that healing the Earth begins with restoring its forests โ even in the driest places on Earth. ๐โจ
